Local wastewater and sewer systems collect water that has been used by households, businesses, and other users.
After use, domestic wastewater moves into the sewer system through pipes and pumping stations to treatment plans where it can be treated to meet fed- eral, state, and local water quality standards.
Wastewater and sewer services are closely coordinated with land use plans in order to determine what areas will be sewered and the overall capacity of the sewer system.
Infrastructure for these purposes may be integrated with the sewer system (called a combined sewer system)
